Default How to assess a 599 I might buy?

Hi everybody!

I haven't been on this forum in a number of years. I had a 599 for a long time and took a number of trips on it, including into Mexico. After my Hornet, I rode a Triumph Tiger (800) which was a dream to ride, but, wanting to do more off-road riding, I found the Triumph to be too top heavy, and too heavy period for me to lift if I dropped it in deep sand. So I got a Kawasaki KLX250 which was absolutely a blast. I made my husband get one too and they were both from 2006 (that way I didn't have to ride into remote areas alone AND I had my repairman with me! Also, of course, because I like his company).

Sooo, anyway, my Kawasaki got stolen off my driveway last week. And I started looking at 599s again! I found this one in Denver on Craigslist:

https://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/d/...686744751.html

It sure *looks* beautiful. And the price is good.

I want to drive up there on Sunday and ride it. Since my husband/mechanic won't be with me, I'm coming to you, who know the bike the best. Is there anything I should be sure to check out on this bike to gauge its condition before I buy it?

Thanks!
Jill

If it fires right up and doesn't smoke, then I'd say buy it if the seller has clear title.

The condition in the bike looks great in the pics and the price is fair. I paid $3K for a 2004 that was complete and original condition. This bike looks to be in same shape with similar mileage.

So, be prepared to buy it on the 1st trip. You can get a uhaul trailer for small $'s. It would be a shame to have to make the round trip again.

Oh, I've got a one way ride up to Denver (from Albuquerque) and I'm taking cash. I intend to ride it home. It will be on my birthday, after all.

Welcome back! Looks like a great deal. No major wear to worry about with those miles, so focus on things which age over time: tires, vacuum lines, and clogged carbs. See if there are signs of it having been dropped. That exhaust might be loud on the highway.
