View Full Version : ...And I am further justified in riding (mostly) like a grandma.

Not that I was ever ashamed. I do my share of 12K blasts around town.

Anyway, it got downright toasty here Friday, so I rode to work. Woot.

On the way home, interstate traffic was stop-and-go. A real bother, but there's a partial HOV lane that I was about 2-3 miles from reaching, so I was hanging in there. From behind me, I catch a glimpse of three squids hauling ass up the right shoulder to avoid the traffic. (Is this legal, even in California?) There's a car blocking the shoulder, so they have to start getting into real, actual lanes. They start cutting in and out of traffic, riding like blockheads, until they get over to the LEFT shoulder, and then they start hauling ass up THAT. I have to admit, as my clutch hand started to get sore, I wondered if I should just follow them. But my cooler head prevailed. I wanted to be the good example. (This is at 35N where it merges with Loop 12, for my DFW buds)

You already know how the story ends. Traffic starts to reeeally bunch up ahead, and I see cars trying to get out from the left lane. Apparently, the squids trying to beat the system were not familiar with this particular stretch of interstate, or just did not remember that the left shoulder has a curb and wicked no-man's land of sand and gravel as it ends into a freeway merge. It's probably navigable at slow speeds, but because it shoots you out inbetween merging traffic, I expect if you're hauling ass, you grab some heavy brake. Not good.

So there they were, walking their bikes across the freeway, making traffic WORSE. Not sure what the damage was - maybe a drop or two, maybe a blowout on the curb. I waved as I rode by, but it was NOT a friendly gesture.

...And I went on my merry way. Many times, the tortise beats the hare, yes?

no being out side the lane is not legal in CA, but squids here do it all the time

Not only is it illegal, but crazy stupid as that is where most of the debris that falls off of cars (from accidents, loose parts, pick-up beds or just littering) ends up. But since we are allowed to lane split here, I haven't yet seen riders shooting up the shoulder.

Honda CB600F - four to seven thousand dollars
Riding boots, helmet, armored pants, jacket and gloves - 1 thousand dollars
Waving at wiped-out squids who will pay 3 times that amount - priceless

I had a similar experience, except I was lane-splitting in between lanes 1 & 2 when from behind me a see this guy going at a pretty brisk pace. I duck into a lane to let him go by, but I guess he didn't want to bother waiting. He must have ducked into and over to the left shoulder and was cruising pretty fast along there, when all I heard was the siren from a highway motocop on his way to pull him over.

I wasn't as innocent or responsible as you were, but I was still within the limits of the law. I bet all these guys had pretty bad days after that.

You did right carli..We can't lane split here so you will see something like this every once in a while.

One personal rule i have when riding with other bikes is don't get duped into chasin' tail lights. Some guys are more experienced/crazier riders than me so yeah...I'll catch up dude.
And like dj said all the shit and gravel on the shoulder not to mention someone actually pulled or pulling over for an emergency..Just foolhardy all around.

Yeah, I would have been right there with you Carlitos. You have to stick to your ground and let the squids be squids.

being a motorcycle courier who is often up against time constraints, i can't say that i always adhere to traffic laws, but I don't ever use the shoulder as a lane for travel.

Why do I have the feeling that one day we'll be hearing you say something like - "You've never heard of the Sato Hornet 919? It's the bike that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parcecs."
