View Full Version : Exhaust recommendation?
How do you like that MIVV carbon oval? Not too loud, is it? I'm looking for a pipe but I don't want one that will make me deaf/get cops called on me for disturbing peace. I like how the Leo Vince sounds (and I like that heat shield it comes with), but the place I found it for the lowest price is bike bandit, and I've heard some pretty bad things about them. Low prices don't mean a thing if they don't get you the right part and have crappy return service.
I like it a lot belligerent. I haven't removed the silencer yet to check out the undiffused sound, but with the silencer in I think it's just about perfect for general riding/commuting. I can't tell you how it sounds compared to stock since I've never heard the stock pipe, but IMO the MIVV oval has a very nice tone/sound. I told PJ I'd take a couple pics for him so he can post an example of the oval mounted on a 599 on his site but the weather here hasn't been cooperating... After I get a chance to take pics I'll post some up here so you can see how it looks on the Hornet. I think it "fits" the look of bike really well too

Here's a bunch of pics I took a couple nights ago. It was getting late and the light was starting to fade so they're a little dark, but at least you can get an idea what the pipe looks like on the bike.

I'm generally not much of a carbon fiber fan but the CF on the MIVV is very smooth with a fine/even weave that has a bit of a sheen to it, but isn't shiny. I was originally considering the Ti but ended up changing my mind after talking to PJ about it.
I really like the Skidmarx belly pan too. It's pretty much exactly what I was looking for. It balances out the top/bottom of the bike really well without changing the basic shape or lines. It covers up just enough but not too much. It leaves the nice motor casings and down pipes exposed, and covers up the less attractive lower case and 4>2>1 exhaust collector.

lloydman 06-06-2008, 02:27 PM Looks awesome.. what kind of Bellypan is that (to sway the subject only slightly)?
JHenley17 06-06-2008, 02:27 PM Where did you order the belly pan from?
Transient 06-06-2008, 02:34 PM Looks like the Skidmarx bellypan - available from Streetfighters by Design:

Yep, that's the one. I think it looks better in black though... I came across a few pics on UK Hornet sites when doing web searches for pans and emailed Skidmarx asking to see if they had any good pics of the other side. They sent me one and told me to contact David Cork at SBD as he's their US disti. Here's the pic they sent me of the left side:

It's a very clean/sane install. Takes no time, is quite solid and comes with a couple brackets for the front two mounting points.

That belly goes straight to my list.

I second that.
jfeagin 06-08-2008, 06:57 PM That is a great bellypan. I think I like it better than the Artfibras!
So back to your Mivv oval. How does it stay up? I don't see any obvious straps or rear peg supports. Just the spring.
Anyway, your bike looks really good, now. Nice job! 8)

James,
I really like the Skidmarx pan too. It doesn't change the basic character of the bike, but it fills it in nicely down low so it doesn't look so top heavy. It gives the bike a more substantial, solid look to it overall.
The MIVV oval mounts the same way I'm guessing their X-cone does. There are two studs sticking out of the backside of the can to accept a triangular mounting bracket, which then bolts directly to the mounting point under the tail. The inlet/sleeve for the midpipe is just a tight slide in held only by the spring (which I had to pre-stretch quite a bit to even get on). It's a solid mount. The only other thing I did was to put a little bit of a compound bend in the hanger bracket to pull the can into the bike 1/2-2/3" or so to get it in nice and tight. Even with that adjustment there's still about an inch of clearance at all points between the can/tail. The carbon portion of the can barely even gets warm. The end caps do warm up a bit but not too much. The tip and midpipe get a fair amount warmer of course but they're pretty much out of the way so no problems there.
Before I ordered the pipe I searched for literally hours looking for U-Tube clips of the MIVV oval and only found one. It's sans silencer and I suspect it's actually a little louder in real life than on the clip. The basic sound is really pretty similar to this with the silencer in except it is quieter at idle. To me the MIVV oval has more of a smooth, "whooming howl" to it under load than what many of the other pipes seem to sound like. You can hear the little mic on the camcorder really clip out and sound like crap when it hits the high revs but otherwise it's a pretty decent representation of the sound. With the silencer in I think it's just about right for overall riding/commuting. Not too loud sitting at the lights but nice sound/volume when getting on it. No flames either 8). Here's the one vid I found:

patrickjs5 06-09-2008, 10:16 AM Did the Oval come with no logo or any markings, or did you remove them?
I really like the look without the badges. Clean.

It came with a badge just like these:

I was very happy to find that it wasn't riveted or really stuck on permanently though. Surprisingly enough, it was just stuck on with some of that rubbery sort of stuff like you see credit cards stuck to the paper in mailers. Easily pried right off and the leftover goo just rolls up in a ball and comes off without any adhesive remover when rubbed. I think it looks a lot better without the advertising too...

Ron,
Thanks for the info. I like how it looks with that mounting system. Very slick. Good to know about the logo sticker, too. That "rubbery stuff" you're talking about is rubber cement. Amazingly versatile stuff, but I wouldn't have thought of it for this kind of application.
lowcash 06-16-2008, 06:12 PM Does anyone know if the silencer from the Scorpion Carbon is removable? it looks to be a decent price.
Its now a toss between the MIVV Carbon and the Scorpion Carbon.... :banghead
lowcash 06-27-2008, 08:02 AM not to beat a dead horse, but i gots the Leo Vince CF. Ordered it today for $298 out the door............ :D
belligerent 06-27-2008, 08:14 AM Where'd you order it from? Morepoweracing.com's been jerking me around for almost a month on that exact pipe and for more money. They don't have the pipe, it's "being manufactured" after they told me when I ordered it that they'd have a shipment in by the end of the week. And they charged my card when I put the order through...uh, not legal.

That's an absolute steal - great pipe, too. :)
lowcash 06-27-2008, 11:20 AM OK, just got my lovely email from bikebandit.com (http://www.bikebandit.com) stating that this item was discontinued and can not be filled. :yell
Guess i got to excited and jumped the gun.
Now its back to the web to find something else. damnit! this sucks
yeroC 06-27-2008, 01:29 PM Shit that sucks. Sorry dude. Scorpion carb fiber seems like a nice
pipe. Or just say fug it and get a X Cone from PJs Parts. Good pipe and
good service.
Jazzdrum69 08-14-2009, 02:37 PM just bought a D&D polished aluminum exhaust w/ polished downpipe for 129 brand new!!!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220383071170&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT
will post pics in the pics forum when it shows up and is mounted...
i was wanting an X-cone but I couldn't pass up this deal, I'm from Texas and the state flag in the Logo is kinda cool.
I've read a bit about this pipe and apparently it's quite loud which I'm really looking forward to....for SAFETY reasons... :)
mitsurugi 08-14-2009, 03:17 PM Great deal!:thumbsup
I frequently check on ebay for bike stuff, but must have missed that one because it's listed for a "CB599F" which is not the actual name of the bike..............
carlitos_92 08-14-2009, 04:29 PM I'm from Texas and the state flag in the Logo is kinda cool.
Hell yeah it is. :thumbsup
But we will be able to hear that pipe all the way over in Texas.
Jazzdrum69 08-14-2009, 06:22 PM yeah my wife said she would buy me a new exhaust as a late fathers day b-day gift and i was looking up the three I had narrowed it down to....x-cone, D&D, and GPR so I started by looking up "D&D honda" and I saw it and new it was a mistaken model number. I used to give her shit about her insane pampered chef collection, but as much money as I've spent on mods on this bike i really have to keep my mouth shut now. I place the blame squarley on the shoulders of people like 370Steve and Jbarx...sweet bikes.
FIREBALL 08-15-2009, 06:18 AM I myself was looking at the mivv cone and 2 bro's but I came across to good of a deal to pass up and got a micron carbon fiber. I like the looks and sound of it on my bike. Now it mounts really close to the tail section, so I went and bought some nylon washers from ace hardware and spaced it alittle away from it, now i'm debating on cutting it down to the rivet at the end of the badge (right after the N). So No badge and alittle shorter looks good to me but im skeptical about the end being close to the tail section when I cut it down. Here's a couple of pics to give you a idea....

JHenley17 08-15-2009, 07:52 AM My end is right by the tail and I haven't had a problem running it for 14k miles. Cut it down. I love the Micron sound, but it looks ridiculous.

after looking at the above quote I can see how there might be some confusion, it was about his comment on fireball's micron. lol

Burnout Pico 08-18-2011, 10:29 PM What kind of muffler goes onto a 599 (2004) ?
Under seat OR Bolt-on ?
I have ordered an Hindle oval under seat muffler and mid pipe, but the spring hooks are misaligned. If you stand behind the bike, the hooks of the mid pipe are at 6 o'clock, but the muffler's hooks are at 3 o'clock. So, 1/4 of a turn misaligned. Do I have the wrong under seat muffler OR was the hooks on my muffler were soldered at the wrong place OR is it a bolt-on muffler I needed ?
Thanks for your help !!
quadracer 08-19-2011, 04:42 AM As far as I know, about the only way to go underseat is to swap the tail for an RR rear cowl, a la 370steve. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd say if everything else matches up, take it to a fab shop and have them cut the hooks and weld them on in the correct position. Lots cheaper than a new exhaust.

That would totally depend on what muffler you bought. Hindle makes a can for the 599, but by your description we have no way of knowing if you got it. Suggest tracking down (via the internet or even this site) the model number for the can for the 599 and comparing it to what you got, if you can find it. Members GuyD and Slide both had Hindles at one time.
EDIT: I had it backwards according to this member. The cans are the same. Check your midpipe.

Here is what part I ordered:
Muffler: Hindle P/N: TGPR162OVU (Motovan P/N: 363-1129)
Elbow: Hindle P/N: HI600SOHSS (Motovan P/N: 363-2013)
(Motovan is a motorcycle parts distributor located in the province of Québec)
I am like 100% sure that my elbow (mid pipe) is the right part, as in an Hindle .pdf document I can see that my bike is listed and this is the corresponding P/N http://www.hindle.com/pdf/2011_STREET_RACE_Catalogue.pdf page 5 (of the document, not the .pdf file) under "Stainless steel slip-on adapters"
Plus, the spring hooks are under the mid pipe, which seems to be where it is supposed to go.
In the same document, at page 16, we can find my muffler "Supersport oval polished titanium stainless steel 16 inch" and it is not specified if it fits my bike or not. But like I said, the muffler hooks are completely on the exterior side.
As for bolt-on muffler, there are bike models listed, but mine does not figure in it.
I also asked GuyD and Slide for information about their muffler models (P/N).
But if it is not the good part, I have no problem returning/exchanging it.
In the picture below, the parts are well assembled as it is supposed to go on the bike (I tested it).
Thanks to you all for helping me out :D
quadracer 08-19-2011, 02:46 PM I would have a shop re-weld the loops on either part, rather than pay return shipping. YMMV.
Burnout Pico 09-01-2011, 06:09 PM Well, I found what fits on my bike !
First of all, the 599 needs a regular Slip-On and NOT the "under-the-seat" type nd now my spring hooks are at the right place, which is, under the muffler.
Secondly, I was not able to get the same one I ordered (oval titanium) so I decided to go with the 16" round carbon fiber (exactly the same kit as GuyD but without the headers) and I am waaaaaay more happy with it !!
Thirdly, no questions re-welding the hooks and make a botched job on this pipe... I exchanged it for no cost at all (except the extra fee for the carbon fiber version) because I happen to have connections. ;)
Now when I first tested it I was annoyed on how much noise it made (tested it late at night) and how much reverb I got in my helmet... I was even thinking on putting back my original pipe on ! I am crazy ??
The answer is: Yes I was ! lol
But the more I ride with it, the more I get a stiffy :P If I may say
And adding to the fact that every person that I show my pipe, they just all say that I have an incredible exhaust sound !! Plus a nice slick look
And finally, the part I used:
Muffler: Hindle P/N: TGPR162OV (Motovan P/N: 363-1057)
Elbow: Hindle P/N: HI600SOHSS (Motovan P/N: 363-2013)
